Addis Ababa, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) The African Union (AU) strongly condemned today the recent riots in this capital, which left an official balance of 23 dead and more than 10,000 displaced persons.
In a statement on the matter, the AU made it clear that it received with great sadness and surprise the news of the attack over the weekend against innocent civilians in the town of Burayu, near Addis Ababa.
The President of the Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemned these acts of cowardice and stressed that the African Union shares the pain of the Ethiopian people.
In addition, he expressed his condolences to the Government and the families of the victims, as well as their full solidarity in this moment of mourning.
According to the text issued, Mahamat is convinced that these crimes will only strengthen the determination of the leadership and citizens to remain united, to persist in the path of reform and to guarantee the prevalence of the rule of law.
He reiterated the AU’s support for the authorities efforts in this regard, and praised the commitment and determination to reconcile the country of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
